Welcome to Swim Team

The AHSTC Otters are part of the Greater Seattle Summer Swim League (GSSSL). The swim team is open to all pool members 5-18 years old— the roster includes swimmers with experience ranging from year round swimmers to those new to the sport. For emerging swimmers age 5-6, we offer Speedy Sixers.

Spring swim practices start the Monday after the club opens (after school). We know a lot of kids are still busy with school, sports, instruments, etc. so come when you can! When the school year ends we move to our summer schedule and practices move to mornings. Meets are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings through the end of July.

Our program strives to be a place where swimmers have the opportunity to enjoy practicing and competing in a team environment. We hope your swimmer will learn and improve their skills over the course of the season, and have fun in a welcoming and encouraging environment. The team is a wonderful opportunity for families to spend time together and be part of the Otter family.

Meet Our Swim Coaches

Chris Veraya

HEAD coach

Chris has led the Arbor Heights Swim Team as its head coach for the past ten years. Chris started his swimming career as a speedy sixer at the Kent Swim and Tennis Club, spending all of his summers in the water, rain or shine. While attending college at UW Chris spent three summers coaching under local legend Mark Prothero, who had a deep and lasting influence on Chris’s coaching philosophy and inspired many of the practices and meet traditions Chris brings to the Arb each summer. Chris is also a lawyer, and maintains an Elder Law practice in Burien. Together with his wife Sam, Chris is raising two future swim superstars age 3 and 5, who you might see around the pool this summer.

Sofia Malaspino

assistant COACH

Sofia began swimming at Arbor Heights as a Speedy Sixer and after taking a break from the team she rejoined the team at age 11. Falling in love with the sport at the Arb, she decided to join SMAC (then CAAT) where she swam year-round for six years. She also swam varsity for Holy Names Academy all four years and was elected team captain her senior year by her teammates. Sofia currently swims on the club team at Creighton University and travels around the Midwest for competitions. This summer will be her fourth season coaching for Arbor Heights, and she can’t think of a better way to spend her summer!  Sofia loves giving back to the fun and welcoming community that sparked her love for the water. When not at the pool or studying in Nebraska she enjoys hiking, camping, and spending as much time outside as possible.

Molly Murphy

assistant COACH

Molly is excited to return to the Arb and can’t wait to coach again this year! She started at Arbor Heights swimming as a speedy sixer, and has loved the water ever since. She just finished her sophomore year of college and is looking forward to a fun summer of fast swimming!

William McGlothlin

assistant COACH

Will is looking forward to returning for his second summer as a coach at the Arb! In his spare time he enjoys making origami cranes, assembling complex lego sets, and riding roller coasters.

Jojo Southwell

ASSISTANT COACH

Jojo started swimming at Arbor Heights at the young age of 4, and has been in love with the sport ever since. She just finished her first year of college, and is thrilled to be joining the coaching team this season!
